The Financial Wisdom Of Fight Club

I don’t want to make a habit of reviewing other blog posts in my daily “Article of the Day” series, but this one was just too amazing to pass up. Paul Michael over at Wisebread wrote The Financial Wisdom Of Fight Club. First, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Wanna see a flick that oozes manliness? Rent or buy Fight Club.
The premise is a little hokey, but Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is completely ripped in this movie and his character just …

Manliness Article Of The Day: Stubble Is Manly

The Telegraph UK cited a study done by Northumbria University in Newcastle, England (great beer by the way) on that Women prefer men with stubble for love, sex and marriage. Fascinating finding that puts science behind what every man has believed for a VERY long time – most women dig the facial hair.
Now, I know I will get all kinds of flack from the women who don’t like it (e.g. RtM gal – a.k.a. my wife), but the fact of the matter is, most do like it. …

The Godfather: A First-Timer Reflects And Wants More

I love The Godfather series. I think it can teach us tons of manly skills in several aspects, and my wife finally got a chance to see I and II today for the first time (III doesn’t really count since Bobby Duval was not invited). She spent nearly the entire day in front of the television, completely enthralled with what the Corleone’s would do next.
I was working in the other room for most of the day, and every 10 minutes or so she would scream my name and …

Over at Chron.com, Craig Yates wrote a very, very interesting review of a Peggy Noonan Wall Street Journal OpEd. I will leave thoughts on politics off this website, but this review REALLY caught my attention. The main reason it grabbed me was the instance where they discussed manliness in the candidates in relation to what these two candidate represent.
Old America (John McCain) vs. New America (Barack Obama) was on trial and it was clear Noonan feels that Old America is the right choice. Ms. Noonan says …

Manly Virtue: Chastity

Chastity, or purity, is opposite of the deadly sin, lust. The Wikipedia definition is:
“sexual behavior of a man or woman acceptable to the ethical norms and guidelines of a certain culture, civilization or religion.”
Pretty good definition if you ask me. I hate to get all Bill Clinton-esque, but it does beg the question of what exactly “acceptable” means to that certain culture or civilization. The accepted sexual behavior of someone living as a Christian is drastically different than that of someone living as a Jew, Bhudist, Hindu, …

How To Deal With A (Freaking) Scorpion Sting

Sorry about the title, but this actually happened to me last night. The wife and I are in bed and everything is great. I get up, go to the bathroom (mind you this is at 3:00 AM), come back and lay down (in my own freaking bed) and WHAM! I get stung by a scorpion in my upper back.
At first, it was only a stinging sensation and I really didn’t know what happened. The wife jumps up, turns on the light and says “something just bit …

Manliness Trait: Try To Be Interesting, But ALWAYS Be Interested

When I was compiling the list of Manliness Traits, this one not only had to be included, it had to be right near the top. I forgot exactly where I heard this saying, so I searched online to see if I could credit the right person, but could not find anything. However, this has been a cornerstone in my life for a long time.
The essence of this Trait lies in the one facet men have had trouble mastering throughout all of time: listening. Most men …

Emergency Fund: Protect Your Family’s Future Without Using Debt

One of my main Manliness Traits is Protect Your Family At All Costs. When it comes to finances and managing your money, there isn’t a more important aspect of that protection than creating and controlling an emergency fund to ensure you cover all your bills when something unusual comes up. Some call this a rainy day fund. Some call it a relief fund. In short, an emergency fund is a cash reserve that you keep in a safe place and use only for emergencies.
It should …
