Profiles In Manliness: Gordie Howe

Gordie Howe earned the nickname “Mr. Hockey” from his teammates, friends, commentators, opponents and his enemies while playing for my beloved Detroit Red Wings. It is possibly the coolest nickname of all time and likely the truest ever given to a man. Gordie Howe, while playing, WAS hockey. In his retirement, he still commands the respect as the best player of all time.
Most everyone, not just hockey fans, knows who he is. His exploits on the ice are legendary. Heck, there is even a made-up …

Return To Manliness Roundup: Mad Men Season Premier Edition

The season premier of Mad Men this past week was stellar.  It was like watching the Mad Men pilot episode all over again.  The show fast forwarded 14 months to Valentines Day 1962 and life was changing for everybody.
Peggy is essentially turning into a hard ass that the other women are beginning to look up to.  Sterling is back to his old womanizing ways.  And Draper is realizing his new, pretty face is looking much older in an ever-changing industry.
The two moments in Mad Men season premier that stood out …

Manliest Moments In Olympics History

We are just a mere week away from the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics and I thought it important to highlight some incredible historical moments. This is a list of “manliest” moments in Olympic history. Many times, they are not the most heroic or most successful – just ones that make us all stop and think what we are capable of as human beings.
When considering manliness, we often think of facing our shortcomings and our greatest fears. We want to win, but also know that it …

Manliness Trait: Never Use Eight Words When Four Will Do

I stole this line directly from the remake of Ocean’s Eleven. Brad Pitt’s character (Rusty) was a man of very few words, but an extremely effective communicator.
Rusty coaches Matt Damon to “never use eight words, when four will do“. As Damon’s character (Linus) prepares for a one-time only attempt at the sting, Rusty wanted Linus to be an effective communicator and to NOT get on the nerves of Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) – which could blow up the whole charade.
What Rusty was afraid of, was that Linus was …

Tough Love Monday: Break The US Addiction To Oil

Every Monday, Return To Manliness explores a pressing issue in today’s society and offers up a “Tough Love” response to fix the problem. The solution(s) offered are not meant to win a popularity contest and may be seen as harsh or somewhat insensitive. This is never meant to offend anyone or any group of people. It is only an alternative way, most likely not all mainstream in its solutions, of exploring the issue.
Ah yes, yet another blog post on gas prices. This one is a little different though. …

Softer Sunday: Top 10 Chick Drinks Of All Time

As most manly men do, I like to drink. If you don’t drink, it makes you no less of a man or limits your manliness in any way. My co-conspirator on this site, Cody, does not drink, and he is one of the manliest guys I know.
However, if you like to wet the noodle now and again, knowing the finer points of the “chick drink” – how to make it, how to serve it, and how NOT to drink them if you’re a guy – are important to …
